Musical Theatre Nerd Alert–Ep. 3

Hey, nerds!

Here is a bit of insight into the world of Musical Theatre History class for the MFAs:  after spending weeks researching a composer or lyricist, crafting a beautiful PowerPoint, and lecturing on his or her life and work, we commonly develop a crush on our subject.  It totally happened with me and George Gershwin and even more so with Jeanine Tesori.  But no one became more infatuated than Courtney did with Oscar Hammerstein II.

Hammerstein served as an important bridge between the older style of operetta–think Kern, Herbert, and the like–and the newer style that would typify the Golden Age–think Loesser, Styne, and the like.  His lyrics have paired with some of America’s best-loved melodies.  Considering his mentorship of Stephen Sondheim, he is one of the most influential creators of the 20th century.

Now is a great time to tell you that if you’d like to subscribe to these videos directly, check out the SDSU Musical Theatre YouTube page.  You can find past episodes there too.  If you’re into social media, find and “like” our SDSU Facebook page.  There are a lot of exciting things happening–including a soon-to-be season announcement–and this is the best place to learn all about it.  There’s also some sweet content on Instagram @sdsumtmfa and on Twitter @MTMFASanDiego.  Later, nerds!

Musical Theatre Nerd Alert–Ep. 2

Hey, nerds!

Happy 4th of July, everyone!  This holiday weekend is a perfect time to share the second episode of Musical Theatre Nerd Alert, because today Liv is telling us everything we need to know about Irving Berlin.  Jerome Kern–someone we learned about in the first episode–once said, “Irving Berlin has no place in American music; he IS American music.”

So happy birthday, America!  Celebrate with some Irving Berlin!

Check it out and share with all the musical theatre nerds you know.

Musical Theatre Nerd Alert Goes Live!

Hey, nerds.  It has been too long.  Seriously.  Too.  Long.

Though the road to H-E-double-hockey-sticks is paved with good excuses, here are mine:  I was finishing the first year of grad school, revising my new musical, and doing two shows.  It kicked my A-double-snakes.  Sorry for the hiatus, but I do have some fun things to show you over the coming months.

In a previous post, I shared a number of photos of the MFAs creating a new web series called Musical Theatre Nerd Alert.  This series is now live, and we will be releasing new webisodes throughout the summer.  These cheeky little vids are crammed with facts about your favorite musical theatre creators along with a few–maybe more than a few–jokes.  We start with Jessica nerding out over Jerome Kern, the “Father of American Musical Theatre.”  Check it out and share it with all the nerds you know!

UP NEXT:  Episode 2–Liv on Irving Berlin
