Musical Theatre Nerd Alert–Ep. 4

Hey, nerds!

Before there was Rodgers and Hammerstein, there was a different “R&H”:  Rodgers and Hart.  Today, we meet “Dick and Larry”, as well as yet another fabulous member of the MFA class, Julia Cuppy.  Aside from being a terrific carpool buddy and fellow former high school teacher, you also might be interested to know that she is the Executive Producer of Libretto Media, who produced our web series.  Musical Theatre Nerd Alert is the first project for this fledgling company, and it really wouldn’t have taken off had it not been for Julia.

Back to our duo du jour, Rodgers and Hart had a difficult partnership at times, but it was one that produced some remarkable songs.  Dick’s completely hummable melodies combined with Larry’s clever lyrics made them an impressive team.  Enjoy episode three!

St. Louis Review features YSP program, new original musical ‘Just Pretend’

Thanks to Youth Sing Praise alumna Colleen Dulle for the feature article of the new musical ‘Just Pretend’ by Bradley J. Behrmann and Orin Johnson in the St. Louis Review.  The article also includes coverage of the Twitter Talk Back Session following the world premiere.  Photos by Weston Kenney.

A PAIR OF QUEENS–Kristy Lozano (Victoria/Vashti) plays the deposed queen of Persia, while Julia Pottinger (Ella/Esther) portrays her successor. With the play-within-a-play device, teens portrayed both actors putting on a Purim spiel and ancient characters within the Esther story.
PRE-SHOW RITUAL–The cast and creative team of ‘Just Pretend’ gather for a final boost of confidence before the show commences. At Youth Sing Praise, the show acts as a capstone to the week of prayer and preparation.
BACKSTAGE AT THE AMPHITHEATRE–Julia Pottinger (Ella/Esther) assists Zach Thompson (Harry/Hegai) with his microphone before the premiere of ‘Just Pretend’. Collin Borisenko (Zeke/Xerxes) scans the crowd of over a thousand in attendance on a cool summer night.

Musical Theatre Nerd Alert–Ep. 2

Hey, nerds!

Happy 4th of July, everyone!  This holiday weekend is a perfect time to share the second episode of Musical Theatre Nerd Alert, because today Liv is telling us everything we need to know about Irving Berlin.  Jerome Kern–someone we learned about in the first episode–once said, “Irving Berlin has no place in American music; he IS American music.”

So happy birthday, America!  Celebrate with some Irving Berlin!
